Chex Quest

In 1996, Chex Cereal released a promotional family-friendly version of the shockingly violent first-person-shooter game, DOOM. The game was called Chex Quest.

Fast forward to the year 2020. Chex Mix has surpassed Chex Cereal in sales and with 90s nostalgia being all the rage, it was time to rerelease the game to a modern audience with better graphics, five new playable characters, and an all new multiplayer mode.

A lot went into the making of this goofball video game. So let’s break it down into snack size pieces.

Fast forward to the present. Chex Mix has surpassed Chex Cereal in sales and it’s time to rerelease the game to a modern audience with better graphics, five new playable characters, and an all new multiplayer mode.

A lot went into the making and release of this goofball video game. So let’s break it down into snack size pieces.

Starting with the official trailer.

Fred Chexter was the original hero from 1996, but there’s more to Chex Mix than just Chex. So we created five new playable characters with original backstories and personalities. Then wrote them hundreds of perfectly corny lines of in-game dialogue, and a unique ending for each character.

Fred Chexter

As the original Chex Quest hero, this courageous warrior was ready to answer the call of duty without a second thought. Or even a fully formed first one.

Wheatney Chexworth

Bazoik has never done her any favors. So why should she risk it all? Sometimes when you want a mission done right, you have to do it yourself.

Dr. O. Ryen

All-knowing, all-powerful, always confusing. The trifles of lesser beings are beneath her. But doing the right thing isn’t.

Shane ‘The Dread’ McBread

A bit of a maverick, mostly a breadstick. This rootin’ tootin old-school cowboy is used to being the last Chex Mix piece to be picked. So he’s got nothing to lose. Except maybe one of his many nicknames.

P.R.E.T.Z.L.

Just like Chewbacca, Groot, and Kenny from Southpark, P.R.E.T.Z.L. is the unintelligible member of the gang that speaks his own language. In this case, mostly beeps and boops.

NaCl96

Named for the salt he’s covered in, this neurotic pretzel-O is the quintessential and self-proclaimed comic relief in a game that was never really meant to be serious.

But wait, there’s more.

We found a fan from 1997 and rebuilt his incredible halloween costume in “HD.”

We commissioned comic book artists to write and illustrate real physical comic books for a limited release.

And partnered with some incredible influencers.

The Result:

135 million earned impressions

2 million minutes of brand engagement

10% sales lift during the promotion.
